HEALTH INSURANCE

If you are traveling on a B1/B2 visa or the Visa Waiver Program/ESTA, you are not required by the U.S. government to have health insurance coverage while in the United States.  However, given the high cost of medical care in the United States, it is strongly recommended that all international visitors to campus have health insurance.

All incoming international students and J-1 visiting scholars are required to have health insurance for the duration of their stay at UNI.  Health insurance for other incoming and outgoing international travelers is highly encouraged.  Learn about healthcare and medical assistance provided internationally and find the health insurance plan that is right for you.

The United States Federal Government sets minimum insurance requirements for J1 Scholars and you can refer to University of Northern Iowa’s insurance requirements here.

You are free to choose your health insurance provider, however we understand that this can seem overwhelming and complicated.  Below is a list of a few insurance providers that are reputable and will sell you J-1 compliant insurance:

COMPASS STUDENT INSURNACE

HTH WORLDWIDE

HTH TRAVEL INSURANCE

LEWER MARK STUDENT INSURANCE

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT INSURANCE

ISO INSURNACE

HARBOUR GROUP

INTERNATIOAL SOS

TRAVEL GUARD

TRAVEL INSURANCE CENTER

A copy of your insurance will need to be sent to the Office of International Programs for review by Ross Schupbach, UNI’s Immigration Advisor, to ensure it meets all J1 requirements.
