If you are traveling on a B1/B2 visa or the Visa Waiver Program/ESTA, you are not required by the U.S. government to have health insurance coverage while in the United States. However, given the high cost of medical care in the United States, it is strongly recommended that all international visitors to campus have health insurance.
All incoming international students and J-1 visiting scholars are required to have health insurance for the duration of their stay at UNI. Health insurance for other incoming and outgoing international travelers is highly encouraged. You are free to choose your health insurance provider, however we understand that this can seem overwhelming and complicated. Below is a list of a few insurance providers that are reputable and will sell you J-1 compliant insurance:
A copy of your insurance will need to be sent to the Office of International Programs for review by Ross Schupbach, UNI’s Immigration Advisor, to ensure it meets all J1 requirements.
